Multimodal Interaction Abilities for a Robot Companion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Among the cognitive abilities a robot companion must be endowed with, human perception and speech understanding are both fundamental in the context of multimodal human-robot interaction. In order to provide a mobile robot with the visual perception of its user and means to handle verbal and multimodal communication, we have developed and integrated two components. In this paper we will focus on an interactively distributed multiple object tracker dedicated to two-handed gestures and head location in 3D. Its relevance is highlighted by inand offline evaluations from data acquired by the robot. Implementation and preliminary experiments on a household robot companion, including speech recognition and understanding as well as basic fusion with gesture, are then demonstrated. The latter illustrate how vision can assist speech by specifying location references, object/person IDs in verbal statements in order to interpret natural deictic commands given by human beings. Extensions of our work are finally discussed.

Towards an affect sensitive interactive companion
As robots are increasingly being viewed as social entities to be integrated in our daily lives, social perceptive abilities seem a necessary requirement for enabling more natural interaction with human users. In this paper, we present an interaction scenario where user play chess with an iCat robot and propose an affect recognition system that uses computational models to automatically extract ...
متن کاملSocial Robots in Learning Environments: a Case Study of an Empathic Chess Companion
We present a scenario where a social robot acts as a chess companion for children, and describe our current efforts towards endowing such robot with empathic capabilities. A multimodal framework for modeling some of the user’s affective states that combines visual and task-related features is presented. Further, we describe how the robot selects adaptive empathic responses considering the model...
متن کاملEvaluation of Unimodal and Multimodal Communication Cues for Attracting Attention in Human-Robot Interaction
One of the most common tasks of a robot companion in the home is communication. In order to initiate an information exchangewith its human partner, the robot needs to attract the attention of the human. This paper presents results of two user studies (N = 12) to evaluate the effectiveness of unimodal and multimodal communication cues for attracting attention. Results showed that unimodal commun...
متن کاملStarting engagement detection towards a companion robot using multimodal features
Recognition of intentions is a subconscious cognitive process vital to human communication. This skill enables anticipation and increases the quality of interactions between humans. Within the context of engagement, non-verbal signals are used to communicate the intention of starting the interaction with a partner. In this paper, we investigated methods to detect these signals in order to allow...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study on Blinking and Eye Movement Detection via EEG Signals for Human-Robot Interaction Purposes Based on a Spherical 2-DOF Parallel Robot
Blinking and eye movement are one of the most important abilities that most people have, even people with spinal cord problem. By using this ability these people could handle some of their activities such as moving their wheelchair without the help of others. One of the most important fields in Human-Robot Interaction is the development of artificial limbs working with brain signals. The purpos...
